This opinion piece discusses the importance of well-observed boundaries in therapy. The author describes how boundaries are put in place to protect clients, yet acknowledges that psychotherapy is not an ordinary relationship, but rather an extraordinary one; and what is important is the psychotherapist’s ability to maintain boundaries. The article advises that therapists should stick to the framework. This does not meant that there will not be moments of spontaneity, but that one should commit to reflecting its place with the frame when it happens.
