The aim of this resource is to help general practitioners to recognise and support carers (people providing support, without payment, to a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour who could not manage without their help). It provides an overview of carers in the UK and what they do, and looks at the benefits for patients and practices in developing work with carers and the UK policy context. It describes how to develop an action plan for carers, including recognising carers, providing information and support, and helping carers to access services. It includes suggested action and discussion points, resources to use to raise awareness within teams, a self-assessment checklist, sources of further information, and examples of general practice teams working to support carers.
