Adolescence, especially early adolescence (10–14 years) represents an important opportunity to assist children infected with HIV in developing positive behaviours that will safeguard their health and the health of others. In particular, by reaching such children before they become sexually active, programmes that build awareness of sexual and reproductive health issues can play a valuable role in preventing further spread of the disease, reducing the risk of reinfection and drug resistance and avoiding the chance of infection with another STI. The study examines programmatic approaches to the sexual and reproductive health of very young adolescents (VYAs). It engages VYAs themselves as an important source of information. Further, it seeks the views of service providers concerning the sexual and reproductive health issues of VYAs. Findings from the study suggest that HIV positive children in early adolescence are poorly informed about sexual and reproductive health matters. There is a strong need for programmes that can address a range of concerns specifically related to their illness as well as to broader issues that arise in the context of this developmental stage. However service providers do not feel confident to inform and educate young adolescents and lack the resources to guide and assist them. To address this gap study findings informed development of a resource for healthcare providers working with HIV positive VYAs in clinic and community settings. (Edited publisher abstract)

The author explores the concept of identity as a frame of analysis in adolescents responding to experiences of trauma. The author looks into numerous themes including the impact of broken identities, different ways of understanding the victim identity, the identities of trauma, the role of transitions, as well as identity dilemmas. By examining the experience of young Mapuche in South America, the experience of war and political violence in Mexico and el Salvador, the identity of displaced young people in Colombia, and a multilevel analysis of child suicides among the Embera ethnic group in Choco, Colombia, a psychosocial and communitarian analysis of the impact of violence and war on youth is offered.

This article, relying on anthropological principles, explores how the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child fits in with the diversity of ideas about childhood around the world. Child-focused civil society organisations (CSOs) working in Africa, Asia and South America have shifted from organising their work around children's needs to promoting their rights. This rights-based framework is informed by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The author explores the value of global rights, and highlights ethnographic studies investigating the lives of young people and their transition into adulthood, pointing to a diversity of ideas about childhood in different parts of the world. The author also raises the question about whether the idea of universal child rights can accommodate such varied worldviews. CSOs have often failed to take account of this diversity in the way they use rights frameworks. Research by anthropologists about children in three situations - at work, on the move and facing violence - is used here to summarise the problems caused if rights based frameworks are used without sufficient understanding of context and complexity.

The empirical literature on children and adolescents working and/or living on the streets of Latin American cities was reviewed to identify family factors contributing to the progression from working to homeless youth. Although the majority of youth living on the street are not orphans, they are more likely than working youth to experience family disruption, migration and physical abuse, and are often unable to use their families as sources of support. The implications of these findings for developing social programmes to serve youth and their families are discussed.

This paper presents the findings of a multi-country research project on street children and youth in urban Latin America. Prior studies of street children have been too superficial, being primarily concerned with identifying the socio-demographic characteristics of this population. A more detailed, analytic view of the situation of street children has been lacking. By using an action research method, the data indicates that economic factors underlie the marginalisation of most Latin American children rather than familial factors (e.g. abuse and neglect), as is so often the case with North American youth. The implications of an action research methodology for assisting social work students to more readily grasp the research process and its relations to practice is discussed.
