Women and children make up eighty per cent of the world's refugee population, yet their voices are seldom heard. In this anthology women from Somalia, Afghanistan, Algeria, Northern Cyprus, Iran, Iraq, Kurdistan, Bosnia, Kosova, and the Congo tell their stories. In addition there are articles on women's lives in each of these countries.

Since the accession of Cyprus to the European Union (EU) in 2004, the numbers of applicants seeking asylum there has increased sharply, with almost 10,000 applications being lodged in that year. This article provides an overview of developments in the Cypriot system of providing for asylum seekers. Social workers struggle with the complexity of administering the system, a lack of coherence or consistency and conflict between their social work role and the requirement to identify 'bogus' asylum seekers. Difficulties in integrating asylum seekers into the community has resulted in negative stereotyping by the media. The legislative framework is patchy, resulting in the need for nongovernmental organisations (NGSs) to become involved in filling in the gaps in support. There is also a lack of understanding of the emotional and psychological needs of traumatised refugees, and a need for better education and training for social workers. There is an urgent need to develop a comprehensive, integrated support system with improved interagency collaboration in providing services for asylum seekers.
