During the last decade, direct work with children who have experienced public disaster or private catastrophe, such as abuse, neglect and other intrafamilial crime, has led to the recognition that classifications of post-traumatic stress disorder are relevant to childhood psychology. Comorbidity is common. Traumatised children who are also bereaved or dislocated are hindered in mourning and in the capacity to sustain or form attachments. Adult psychopathology often may be linked with unrecognised or underestimated effects of psychological trauma during childhood and adolescence. This paper discusses therapeutic interventions, outlines research hypotheses and provides an introductory bibliography.

A child's responses to death my be affected by the circumstances of the death, the loss that he or she has experienced, and the subsequent life changes which result. Though earlier studies have failed to identify the extent of children's difficulties after exposure to traumatic events, there is increasing evidence that most children react adversely. We believe that an early debriefing and the therapeutic intervention by a child psychiatric team can be helpful, as well as the advice and support of a range of other professionals.
