Examining the job descriptions of social workers in Israel, this study aimed to identify the extent to which social workers there are required to engage in policy practice and advocacy. The researchers carried out a quantitative content analysis of 78 or more social work job descriptions, mainly for jobs in the local and national government sectors. They found that 45% of the descriptions stipulated at least one policy practice activity, usually within the organisation itself, while some 40% of the job descriptions contain no policy practice requirements at all. The 4 most commonly required policy practice related activities were: identifying needs and social problems and in some cases presenting them to superiors; initiating activities to establish, develop, promote or improve services; participating in committees, forums and discussions in accordance with organisational directives; and establishing and maintaining relationships with people and agencies in the community for the purpose of promoting services.
