Private fostering concerns private arrangements for placing of children made by a parent with a carer independently of the local authorities. This article looks at the new role of private fostering social worker (a designated social worker assessing and monitoring the welfare of children within private fostering arrangements) resulting from recent legislative and policy changes, exploring professional identity and practice strategies. Two case studies are used to reflect on the practice required to support private fostering, each providing the practitioner's reflections their initial response to the referrals and case notes followed by further combined critical reflection by an academic analyst with the practitioner. The authors conclude that confused perceptions and stereotypes about what constitutes private fostering and who is privately fostered persist, impacting on the perceived role of the private fostering social worker and practice strategies adopted.
