The idea of social pedagogues is becoming more popular across children's services in the UK, particularly in residential child care. The author looks at how this idea is being received among UK social workers and what can be done to overcome suspicion. The article draws on findings from a project which involved 30 residential child care workers and managers and five social pedagogues from Denmark and Germany in two parts of England. In one half of the project social pedagogues worked along side residential child care workers; and in the other residential child care workers attended development workshops led by social pedagogues.
