Calling time on injustice

The author talks to Martin Morton, a social worker who spoke out against the financial abuse being experienced by a number of vulnerable adults who were being overcharged for services. The social worker describes how being a whistleblower affected his life. It resulted in the loss of his job, and an 11-year battle before he received an apology from Wirral Council and was offered his job back. The need for support and guidance for social workers who want to report bad practice is highlighted.

Social workers are being encouraged to work for themselves and start up social enterprises. The benefits of the model, as well as the potential pitfalls are discussed. A case study of the Foster Care Co-operative is also provided which outlines some of the challenges it faced. The Co-operative, set up 12 years ago as an alternative to the large organisations that dominated the foster care sector.

Over the past 18 months there have been a number of developments that point to a long overdue focus on adult protection. This article looks briefly at recent initiatives. These include the Law Commission's recommendation that adult safeguarding boards in England should be placed on a statutory footing. Developments in Northern Ireland, with the Northern Ireland Adult Safeguarding Partnership developing a new strategy. The review of the 'In Safe Hands' guidance in Wales and improvements in adult safeguarding practice in Scotland with the Adult Support Protection (Scotland) Act 2007.
