The authors replicated a study conducted by Brooks (1982) in order to analyse current trends in specialisations in social work curricula. Results indicated that specialisations in the areas of mental health, family and children's services, ageing, health, and industrial social work increased. At the same time, there was movement away from the areas of corrections, school social work, poverty and minority issues, and public social services. The authors conclude by discussing the overall impact of these trends, or what they call the "boutique effect", on at-risk populations and the social work profession.
