The nature of employer’s involvement in social work education: an international exploration

A degree in social work is primarily a preparation for a career as a professional social worker. As such, it might be expected that higher levels of employer engagement would be justified. This study explored to what extent employers should be involved in social work education. Email interviews and internet inquiries sent to 23 universities were used to explore the nature and extent of employer engagement in qualifying social work education programmes across 10 countries: Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the US. Findings indicated considerable variations in the nature and extent of engagement in admissions processes, programme management and assessment of student competence. Practice learning and field education were the main areas for employer engagement. The desirability of employer engagement is discussed, and implications for practice are discussed.

There has been a rapid growth of trans-national education and training in social work but little attention has been given to the importance of developing effective communication through the process of interpretation. Drawing on experiences in working with colleagues in Eastern and Central Europe the article explores some of the issues in the development of good practice in this trans-national education across linguistic boundaries. Using case examples from the Czech Republic and Ukraine, this paper explores some of the issues and dilemmas educators and translators face when working together to plan and deliver a trans-national social work programme. Concludes with a code of practice for interpretation in the context of trans-national social work education.
