This article, presented at the ATSWE Conference, makes the case for the retention of probation training within the Diploma in Social Work (DipSW). It traces the history of CCETSW's responsibility for probation training, and raises as problematic the coincidence in timing of two Home Office Reviews (Coleman and Dewis) with CCETSW's recent reappraisals of qualifying training. It outlines the recent DipSW review with particular reference to the Probation Pathway Requirements; and explores the similarities and differences in current probation and social work practice, and makes the case for shared training and particular pathway provision, a case strongly endorsed by evidence from forthcoming research.

This article establishes the case for research for practice, for social work as an independent discipline, based in its own practice knowledge. In the present context, with government plans for an employment-led Training Organisation for the Personal Social Services (TOPSS) and a user-led General Social Care Council (GSCC), the importance of a research, knowledge led approach to improving social work practice is seen as crucial. Drawing from recent CCETSW work on Research-Mindedness, and on a Joseph Rowntree Foundation project on Using JRF Findings in Social Work Education and Training, the importance of promoting information about practice research, and of gaining access to it, are emphasised. Implications for social work education and practice are drawn, particularly the importance of making research findings available and accessible to students, so that they take forward into their practice the habit of always looking for relevant research as an essential part of good practice.
