The Mental Health Act 2007 'amends' the 1983 Act, (and introduces the Deprivation of Liberty safeguards to the Mental Health Act 2005). This article summarises some of the key changes. The article briefly covers changes to the definition of mental disorders; the Five Guiding Principles; and the new statutory roles of: responsible and approved clinicians, approved mental health professionals, Independent Mental Health Act advocates, and the nearest relative.
