Suicide and deliberate self-harm are important causes of mortality and ill-health in adolescents. This article describes the suicidal behaviours seen in adolescents and looks at the role of bereavement and other losses as both long-term risk factors and as immediate triggers for self-harming behaviour.

Patients discharged from hospital following a suicide attempt were randomly allocated to either: (1) a treatment group receiving standard management plus a token allowing re-admission to hospital on demand; or (2) a control group receiving standard management only. The rates of further suicide attempts and the use of token in the year following the initial attempt were monitored. Although the differences between the groups did not reach the level of statistical significance, results suggest lower rates of readmission to hospital by patients who were given the token.
