Elderly refugees are exposed to particularly high risks for their mental health since they are confronted with multiple losses. One of their greatest hardships is loss of their social and emotional support, enhancing more positive orientation towards the present time and the future, can be achieved through different types of groupwork. Four such groups for elderly refugees are described. Implications of these experiences for planning and developing groupwork activities with elderly refugees elsewhere, are discussed.

Describes the development of a programme of psychosocial assistance to refugee women from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and displaced women from Croatia accommodated in four camps in Zagreb. A new study of newcomers from Former Yugoslavia to Ontario, Canada, describes the settlement and adaptation challenges they face, the biggest of which are related to language, employment and cultural change. The author discusses the policy and practice implications of the findings concluding that a comprehensive settlement policy should be devised that is sensitive to the varied needs of newcomers, and holistic settlement services should be offered together with appropriate and timely follow-up.
