Respite care for disabled children: micro and macro reflections

Examines the proposal that by exploring at a micro level the control exercised over children it is possible to identify the wider societal mechanisms for maintaining power at a macro level. The focus of the paper is on the provision of respite care for disabled children in settings away from home. Drawing on principles within childhood sociology and referencing recent research within disability studies consideration is given to issues of 'power and control' in relation to disabled children and how that reflects the structure of adult society. Concludes with discussion of the concept of citizenship as a model for change.
The effect of functional disability on service utilization: implication for long-term care

This article reports findings of an American study to assess the ability of elderly individuals to care for themselves and their actual patterns of long-term care services utilization. Such information is necessary to establish eligibility for access to the long-term care services network. Policy and practice implications are discussed.

This article highlights the lack of information about protective services to the developmentally disabled population in the USA and lack of coordination between agencies serving people with developmental disabilities and those providing protective services. Discusses the signs and symptoms of abuse in the developmentally disabled population, the alternative communication strategies required when interviewing, and the special skills needed for case assessment. The author ends with a series of federal, state, and community level policy recommendations.
