Discusses how conductive education has been characterised by some disabled academics as an intervention that is oppressive to disabled people. This article considers the contributions of people with learning difficulties to an undergraduate degree programme in Learning Disability Studies at the University of Manchester. It begins with an evaluation of models of disability and their implications for the study and production of knowledge about learning disability. It then goes on to explore the role of people with learning difficulties--and the place of their experiences and knowledges--both on the Learning Disability Studies programme and within the academy. Drawing on the experience of the Learning Disability Studies programme, it argues for the inclusion of people with learning difficulties in learning, teaching and research.

Independent is generally seen as a positive step for young people, leading to them becoming self-reliant and less dependent on others. Yet this may not be the same for young disabled people. This study is based on interviews with 44 young disabled people of Asian, African and Caribbean origin. This report explores diversity in disability. It examines the complex relationships between disability and other aspects of identity, chiefly: ethnicity, gender, age and sexuality. Based on qualitative research with disabled people itprovides evidence about the interaction of different characteristics on disabled peoples’ everyday lives and perceptions of self-identity. It explores the salience of concepts such as ‘compounded’ or ‘multiple’ disadvantage to the everyday lives of disabled people from diverse social groups and discusses if, how and why different aspects of diversity affect people’s everyday experiences.
