A significant proportion of the Indian population has severe speech and motor impairments, and very few have access to assistive devices which are expensive, largely imported and geared to the needs of western consumers. This paper briefly describes Sanyong, a system developed in India that is based on a query-response interface using icons. Users can also communicate using pre-stored messages, which can be customised, or by using an on-screen keyboard (with word prediction facility) to compose messages. The Sanyong system is currently available in Bengali, Hindi and English versions and is used in a range of Indian institutions serving children with speech and motor impairments resulting from cerebral palsy.
