This Australian study aimed to reveal what aspects of life bother people with different forms of disability. Ninety-nine adults with a visual, intellectual or physical disability completed a self-report stress scale. Contrary to expectation, total stress levels did not seem to be unusually high. All participants acknowledged their disability, but only half regarded it as a stressor in itself. Participants with a visual, physical or intellectual disability reported similar levels and patterns of stress with no highly significant differences between the groups. In accord with general research findings, significantly higher stress scores were found for females, those feeling unhealthy, those experiencing a recent major life event and those who found no time to relax. Although not definitive, this study provides preliminary evidence that people with various types of disability do not report particularly high levels of stress despite having to come to terms with particular hardships associated with their disability.

When a consultation exercise is designed with disabled people, the result will be influenced by all the participants' experience of consultation and their knowledge and understanding of research. The exercise will also be a product of particular place and time. These influences are explored in a case study carried out by the authors in partnerships with disabled people; they adopted a pluralistic and flexible approach to consultation, which gave information as well as sought it, and included a commitment to developing community skills with an eye on succession.

The authors investigate whether sex has a direct independent effect on disability or whether sex has an interactive effect on the relationship between chronic diseases/conditions and disability, and whether these effects differed in middle-aged versus older adults. Find that the effect of sex on activities of daily living difficulty is largely explained by social and health-related covariates in middle-aged and older adults. In contrast, the independent association of female sex with decreased strength and mobility in both groups cannot be explained by our models' social or health-related variables. In addition, the positive association of body mass index with mobility difficulty is significantly worse for women than for men.
