Describes how groups of speech pathologists all over Sweden have worked together to build networks for professional co-operation. Today, about 20 systems are permanently installed and two of the schools for therapists in Sweden are involved giving courses the ISDN network. Patients as receivers of therapy on a more general level have also been involved. Participants in the projects have tried several different applications, including sharing standard programs over the network at the same time as they participate in a videoconference. The projects are based on research work on language training using videotelephony at the University of Karlstad.

Russian government policy is to organise services for disabled people, but these intentions are not enough. Implementation depends on organisational, financial and legal aspects. It is possible to change the present system of assistance now. For this purpose it is necessary to create a uniform information environment for and about disabled people. The authors present a clear and constructive program for practical realisation of an information system in one social sphere - rehabilitation of disabled people.

A significant proportion of the Indian population has severe speech and motor impairments, and very few have access to assistive devices which are expensive, largely imported and geared to the needs of western consumers. This paper briefly describes Sanyong, a system developed in India that is based on a query-response interface using icons. Users can also communicate using pre-stored messages, which can be customised, or by using an on-screen keyboard (with word prediction facility) to compose messages. The Sanyong system is currently available in Bengali, Hindi and English versions and is used in a range of Indian institutions serving children with speech and motor impairments resulting from cerebral palsy. Construction of valued identities and evidence-based cultural histories is not easy for deaf or disabled people across Africa. This paper locates some deaf people, gesture and formal Sign Language in African histories, to illustrate possible sources and encourage local, national and pan-African compilation of materials. Documentary evidence of deaf individuals or groups is indicated from 25 nations, sourced in travellers' accounts, legal and genealogical records, government reports, institutional and missionary archives, linguistic studies, folklore, novels, religious narrative, mime and dance. Interpretations and uses of the materials remain for deaf people in Africa to decide according to their own various interests and objectives.
