Reviews the major community-based epidemiological studies that have reported data on anxiety disorders in individuals aged 65 and over and examines age-related changes in their prevalence and incidence. Finds that women do have a higher prevalence of anxiety disorders than men but this difference diminishes with increasing age, as does the apparent prevalence of all anxiety disorders apart from generalised anxiety, measured without hierarchical rules, which appears to be maintained or increase. A tri-dimensional approach (psychic, somatic and behavioural) to anxiety measurement is advocated in order to facilitate future studies of age-related changes which may lead to a reappraisal of the status of generalised anxiety as 'residual category'.
