In the context of the development of self-directed support, this paper looks at peer support as an element of an alternative model of support brokerage called community brokerage (an approach focusing on the support system offered by people and organisations in communities to assist people to direct their support). It is one of a series of papers exploring elements of community brokerage and its link to a model of care management that supports personalisation and people directing their own support. It builds on work undertaken in the Yorkshire and Humber region on developing an approach called the New Script for Social Work. The paper describes peer support, where people provide emotional and practical help to each other, highlighting the importance of relationships and interactions between people who are peers and providing brief case examples of peer support in practice. It also sets out key points for developing peer support, and notes that while it can be less resource intensive than professional advisers, it may still need some investment.

It is one of a series of papers exploring elements of community support brokerage and its link to a model of care management that supports personalisation and people directing their own support. It builds on work undertaken in the Yorkshire and Humber region on developing an approach called the New Script for Social Work. The paper describes community engagement and community support in practice, with case examples. It makes a distinction between community supports (a wide range of groups and organisations involved in community activities which may or may not receive funding from a local authority) and support services (organisations involved in the delivery of social care services and receiving payment for this, including private and voluntary sector service providers), but acknowledges that sometimes an organisation will carry out both functions. It also sets out key areas to consider in developing and promoting the model of community-based support.
