Many parents with and without learning difficulties need extra help or support with their children. This often happens informally within families and from other women. Such help can be vital. Some people with learning difficulties are able to bring up their children with help from their own families, and a wide variety of ordinary support services such as midwives, health visitors and community nurses. Others need more and might come to the attention of social services as a result.
