This paper describes the implementation of a neonatal hearing screening programme in a Brazilian hospital, focusing on the return rates of infants who failed the first screening. The population attending the hospital comes mainly from economically under-privileged groups, and it was felt that failure to attend for a second screening was related to mothers’ lack of knowledge about hearing loss detection and the benefits of early intervention. A strategy was developed, involving a social worker as part of the neonatal screening team, to provide detailed information to such mothers both before screening and after the first screening. Following implementation the no-return rate declined from 39.8% to 25.8%.
