Palliative care in dementia: caring at home to the end

This article describes the views and experiences of nine carers who continue to care for a person with end-stage dementia at home. The author argues that adequate support should be provided to enable them to continue to care at home for their loved ones at the end stages of the illness.

Beyond Barriers was a two year project that aimed to promote a palliative care approach to the care of people in the later stages of dementia living in care homes across Scotland. The project brought together care home staff and relatives to participate in a three-day education programme so they could learn more about palliative care and dying with dementia. A brief summary of the project the project and its outcomes is provided.
