Elder abuse and neglect have increasingly become issues of concern. Older women are the majority of older people who experience abuse, yet there have been few attempts to adequately consider this. Consideration of the potential links between domestic violence and elder abuse is appropriate. This article provides an overview of knowledge about elder abuse and neglect and then moves to examine factors from domestic violence. An exploration, through review, of the similarities and differences between these approaches will assist in determining relative strengths and weaknesses. This will then contribute towards greater understanding of the linked phenomena of elder abuse and neglect and assist towards both protection and prevention of abuse. Empowerment theory is central to social work and to feminist gerontology. Yet an emphasis on increasing power and control over the circumstances of one's life does not neatly “fit” the involuntary bodily realities that figure centrally in the experiences of late age. Argues that the paradox of late life empowerment is that it requires acceptance and affirmation of the weak, suffering, and uncontrollable body.

The Bangladeshi population is the fastest growing ethnic group within the UK. Despite this, Bangladeshis in Britain are an under-researched group. This is especially true of the women in this community. This book examines, Bangladeshi women's domestic and community lives. Drawing on interviews with over 100 first generation migrant women in the London borough of Tower Hamlets (home to the largest population of Bangladeshis in the UK) the report: presents the first detailed study of this significant ethnic minority group; identifies the pressures facing women as they juggle competing demands from younger and older generations; addresses particular concerns such as the barriers to adopting English language within the community; highlights the issues for those involved in service delivery; and demonstrates the range of issues to be considered when trying to access minority ethnic communities for the purpose of research.

The emphasis on public participation in contemporary policy discourse has prompted the development of a wide range of forums within which dialogue takes place between citizens and officials. The question of 'who takes part' within such forums is critical to an understanding of how far new types of forums can contribute to the delivery of objectives of social inclusion and democratic renewal. This article draws on early findings of research conducted as part of the ESRC Democracy and Participation Programme. It addresses three questions: 'How do public bodies define or constitute the public that they wish to engage in dialogue?'; 'What notions of representation or representativeness do participants and public officials bring to the idea of legitimate membership of such forums?'; and 'How do deliberative forums contribute to, or help ameliorate, processes of social inclusion and exclusion?'
