Examines how HIV is strategically planned for and managed in the UK today, with particular reference to older patients who acquired HIV early on and are living longer as well as older patients who have recently acquired HIV. The report draws on evidence from desk-based literature review and research, in-depth telephone interviews with stakeholders across the UK and a stakeholder discussion. It explores new settings for managing care, given the advances in technology and the commitment to give patients more choice about their treatment. It also develops new insights and proposals for treating HIV alongside co-morbidities brought on through the ageing process. The research responds to these objectives with a focus on treatment pathways and reference to the increased costs as numbers of people with HIV rise. The report covers a wide range of related aspects including the challenges of living with HIV for the older person, age-specific HIV treatment, commissioning, the role of the GP and nurse-led clinics, mental health and social care needs, housing, personal budgets, telehealth and confidentiality.
