West Lothian Council has implemented telecare for older people within a new model of care for older people which emphasises ageing in place and capacity building, and utilises both care at home and housing with care. This paper reviews the positive evaluation of the programme in relation to provision of telecare at home for people with dementia. Issues discussed include the timing of intervention, staff and client expectations and experiences, the appropriateness of housing-based support for people with dementia and the ‘mainstreaming’ strategy, whereby telecare was made available to anyone aged 60 and over who wanted it. In conclusion, the paper highlights lessons learned from the West Lothian telecare programme for supporting people with dementia.
