Mindfulness practices are based on ancient traditions of Buddhism and yoga and can be tailored to individuals with different needs in order to improve quality of life. They focus on key elements of awareness, compassion, a focus on the whole person and the interconnectedness of life. The use of one model, mindfulness-based elder care (MBEC), which has been shown to be effective in helping participants cope with stress, chronic and acute conditions and improve quality of life is described. The model has also been adapted for use by caregivers, where it was found to reduce self-reported depression and stress.

Reports on the introduction of a psychoeducational group therapy programme for chronic pain, anxiety and distress, modeled on the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program at a medical centre, into a 514-bed academic nursing home. Group members practiced breathing exercises, meditation, visualization, and guided imagery. Music and aromatherapy were also utilized to provide a calming milieu. In addition, group tasks focused on reframing responses to difficult situations and empowering the residents. Members are taught to practice techniques in response to pain and stressful episodes. Preand posttests, using the Coop scales measuring emotional wellbeing and level of pain, showed that following the Relaxation Group, nursing home residents felt less sad and showed a trend towards feeling less pain.
