This essay describes another service environment, that of Australia, where there is a shortage of long-term care beds. Marketing is viewed more broadly than as a means of attracting desired applicants. It is for the systems as a whole one that educates consumers as the options of care. Social work in an individual long-term care facility is "considered a luxury.

The process by which elders with disabilities are forced to relocate from their homes to congregate living facilities is of critical societal importance. This article is a descriptive exploration of the lived experiences of forty-one persons aged 60 and over that made such a transition. This research assists social workers to better understand this vulnerable population. The social work profession serves the most vulnerable members of our society. The personal, professional, and policy implications that stem from research such as this enables the profession to carry out its stated commitments to our society's elderly cohort.

The role of social work in the admissions process to long-term care facilities is discussed from an international perspective using three countries: Israel, Australia, and South Africa as illustrations. Although each of these countries is concerned with demographics, limited resources and meeting the cost of services for an increasing number of older persons, their governments, culture and societal expectations differ. Hence the nature of the challenges and the potential solutions differ.

Research has learned much in the last forty years about the factors critical in a gerontological social work assessment.
