This article examines the practice implications of the current Australian policy context as it affects work with older people. Forms of 'indirect' practice are identified as central to social work in aged care, and the implications of this for the standing of aged care social work in the wider profession are discussed. It is argued that 'indirect' practices are core to the development of the profession and so should be seen as 'real' social work. In conclusion, it is suggested that unless social work affirms practice with older people and their families, it will fail to be congruent with its values.

Describes the operation of the service and assesses its effectiveness in practice.

Older people are major users of health and social services. Many require more time than younger patients to make a full recovery. But rehabilitation services to help them in their recovery are often patchy and disjointed. An integrated range of services is needed, linked by good care pathways and good organisation across professional and organisational boundaries. It is argued that a more strategic approach is needed, to promote a shared understanding of what is required, and a whole-systems approach that looks at rehabilitation in the round and makes full use of new financial flexibilities.
