- Journal article citation:

- Publisher:

Describes a study of community-resident demented older people living at home with the support of a family carer and a matched sample of non-demented older people to determine the factors predictive of institutionalisation. The study confirms the high risk of institutionalisation amongst demented older people. Early institutionalisation of demented elders can be predicted and should be planned for, to help elders and carers cope with the process of adjustment. Where carers are totally committed to continuing care, intensive community support may be required for problems associated with advanced dementia.

The law relating to the provision of social services for elderly and disabled people is inadequate. A ruling which means that local authorities will be able to refuse to provide residential care to older people solely because they have a little money in the bank has shocked older people and thrown government policy into disarray. Calls for an immediate change to the law so that older people continue to receive the financial support they have been promised.
