Discusses the salient features that make an elderly person a candidate for placement include lack of family, sick and/or invalid partner, childlessness, loneliness, and diminished activities of daily living.

It summarises what aspects were most important to visitors, many of whom were former carers and looks at the implications for purchasers and providers of residential care. Closes with a methodological discussion about how the valuable views of visitors may be tapped without encountering reticence due to guilt or fear of retribution affecting the resident.
