Previous research has shown that fear of crime among the elderly is very common, and being a victim is not uncommon. There have been no descriptions of the impact of crimes on the mental health of the victims. In this study, 350 psychiatric patients were screened for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). One hundred of the patients had been victims, and five of the victims (5%) had PTSD. Their clinical characteristics are described. In this series most crimes were not complicated by PTSD.

The predictive value of health, health behaviour and functional ability for the occurrence of depression in elderly Finns is described using a longitudinal design. The persons determined as not being depressed in an epidemiological study in 1984-85 were interviewed and examined in a follow-up study in 1989-90. Describes the symptoms indicating depression for men and women and identifies factors likely to result in a greater risk of depression occurring in old age. The risk factors were analysed by contrasting the persons depressed in 1989-90 with those not depressed. The results support the hypotheses of a multifactorial aetiology and a relapsing and episodic course of depression in old age.
A study to examine the relationship of the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) to other tests of cognition and function

In this study, the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills AMPS, observational assessment of functional ability, was compared with other tests of function and cognition, namely the Functional Independence Measure FIM, the CAMCOG (the cognitive component of the CAMDEX Cambridge Examination for Mental Status in the Elderly) and the Mini-Mental State Examination MMSE. The subjects were people with diagnosed dementia or mild memory impairment. The results were as expected, revealing significant relationships between AMPS process ability and the CAMCOG, the MMSE and the FIM social/cognition scale, and between AMPS motor ability and the FIM physical scale. This supported the validity of the AMPS as an evaluation of the interaction between cognitive impairments and disability in complex activities of daily living.
How common are the anxiety disorders in old age?

This community study of the anxiety disorders in people aged 65 and over found a relatively high prevalence of anxiety disorders with phobic disorders being the most prevalent subclassification. While generalised anxiety was usually seen with other psychiatric syndromes, phobic disorder was usually observed in the absence of either depression or anxiety. The results suggest that while generalized anxiety should be placed below depression in a diagnostic hierarchy, phobic disorder does not fit with this diagnostic model.
The dynamic relationship between social support and health in older adults: assessment implications

Explores the dynamic relationship between social support and health within a representative sample of community-based Cleveland, Ohio residents for 1975, 1976, and 1984. Results support the existence of "delayed effects," with direction indicating initial health affects future social support. More specifically, as disability increases, social contact decreases. Findings suggest that if present disability affects future contact, the older adult could be "at-risk" for institutionalisation. The implications for geriatric social workers are that they need to address supports for the caregiver or support system as well as the needs of the older adult when developing a care plan.

Domestic violence is usually thought of as the battering of young women, but victims of family violence are not always young. Over the past twenty years, policy makers, social service providers, health care professionals and law enforcement personnel have grappled with the issue of domestic violence. Elder abuse is both part of the agenda and separate from it. It is part of the agenda because it includes violence within the family. It is separate because it often has it own set of dynamics and service needs, extending beyond the family. Describes the problem of elder abuse and the development of services to provide a constructive community responses.
