A summary of recent trends in life expectancy among those aged 65 and over in England, in the English regions and local authorities. The report shows that the overall upward trend in life expectancy at all older ages continues. Life expectancy at older ages in England is now the highest on record for all the age and sex groups studied, except for females aged 85, for whom it is the same as it was in 2011. The report shows however, that despite this overall picture of improvement, calculated life expectancy for older people in some parts of the country did not increase or fell. At English local authority level there are significant variations in the trend in life expectancy at older age for which there is no apparent explanation. The report also includes trends in life expectancy in the European Union. (Edited publisher abstract)

This toolkit provides an overview of the impact of oral diseases in vulnerable older people and presents the evidence of what works to improve oral health to inform commissioning. It focusses on those groups for which adult social care departments in local authorities commission services, which include: residential and nursing home residents, older people living with dementia, older people living with learning disabilities, and frail older people. It describes the opportunities for commissioning programmes to improve the oral health of vulnerable older people and looks at financial approaches that could maximise the value for the investment. It also provides a summary of recommendations from a supporting evidence review and from relevant NICE guidelines, to help local authorities to maximise oral health outcomes. It is one of a suite of resources to support local authorities to review, develop or commission services to improve the oral health of vulnerable older adults. (Edited publisher abstract)

The Heatwave Plan for England is intended to protect the population from heat-related harm to health. It aims to prepare for, alert people to, and prevent, the major avoidable effects on health during periods of severe heat in England. It recommends a series of steps to reduce the risks to health from prolonged exposure to severe heat for: the NHS, local authorities, social care, and other public agencies, professionals working with people at risk; and individuals, local communities and voluntary groups. The plan describes the Heat-Health Watch system which operates in England from 1 June to 15 September each year. The system comprises five main levels (Levels 0-4), from long-term planning for severe heat, through summer and heatwave preparedness, to a major national emergency. Each alert level triggers a series of appropriate actions which are detailed in the Heatwave Plan. (Edited publisher abstract)

This review provides a synthesis of evidence for 10 key areas for potential interventions that might be used by local authorities to improve the oral health of vulnerable older people, aged 65 years and over in need of special care, support, or protection. The focus is on those groups for whom adult social care departments in local authorities commission services, which include: residential and nursing home residents, older people living with dementia, older people living with learning disabilities, and frail older people. Searches were undertaken using electronic databases for systematic reviews and other reviews published from 1991 onwards, and additional searches were also carried out. Recommended interventions identified include programmes of training in oral care for care staff and carers, protocols developed for oral care in care settings, and routine denture identification marking to ensure that lost dentures can be returned to the right person.
