The authors provide an overview of the role and value of adult social care and discuss future needs. They outline the economic case for investing in adult social care, emphasise the importance of joint working, strongly support self-directed support but emphasise the need for equal access for all and to consider everyone as individuals, consider the importance of the social care workforce, argue the need for new ways of working with families, discuss the value and needs of carers, consider support such as housing and employment and the value of supporting older people to live at home, and discuss the need for inclusive services to prevent people from needing social care. Brief case reports are provided throughout and details of contacts given. The authors argue that a sustainable solution to the funding of adult social care is needed and that the momentum for social care reform must not be lost.
