Pension provision in the UK was reformed with the 1986 Social Security Act which extended the options for both employers and employees in the area of additional pensions. Describes the advent of the Appropriate Personal Pension (APP) and the issues it raises. Questions whether the APP involves more risks than other forms of provision. Argues that undoubtedly some will benefit from an APP, if they are able to make substantial contributions and have the knowledge to judge the performance of different funds and switch between them. For the majority this unlikely to happen: for them the APP will become another form of lottery, but more costly than the National Lottery.

Emerging models of occupational social work with more inclusive roles are explored and applied to the problems of older workers, with an emphasis away from work exit to maintenance and re-entry.

More than 10% of registered nurses now work within the nursing home sector. This study investigated the level of employer support received by 41 nursing home nurses attending a seminar and the difficulties they faced in continuing their professional development. Nurses in the study stated that patient dependency and workload had increased and their training needs had risen. Almost two-thirds of the nurses attending received no employer support; the same proportion found it difficult to access professional education that was related to the needs of nurses working within nurse-led units. Almost two-thirds anticipated difficulties in meeting Post Registration Education and Practice requirements. The report discusses the implications of those difficulties on recruitment, retention and quality of care and concludes by recommending further research; government action to encourage links between universities and nursing homes and funding of Post Registration Education and Practice.
