Investigating referrals for self-neglected poses a quandary for older abuse workers. They must balance the right to self-determination against the right of the community to express concern for the welfare of elderly persons. This study combines quantitative data with qualitative data garnered from interviews with elder abuse investigators to explore whether service delivery to self-neglecting elderly are perceived as an unnecessary intrusion into their lives. The results of four related research questions are presented and the implications of the findings are discussed.
