In Singapore, 750 people are diagnosed with renal failure every year. Even with dialysis provision, treatment outcomes for renal patients, such as mortality, quality of life, or hospitalisation, can be poor. The aim of this study was to identify differences in the social risk factors for hospitalisation between elderly and non-elderly patients. The sample consisted of 100 patients aged 65 years and over and 219 patients aged 21 to 64 years who started dialysis with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) between October 2007 and September 2008. A clinical data mining method of patient data provided by the NKF was used to compare social profiles, medical condition, hospitalisation outcomes, and different social and medical risk factors associated with the hospitalisation outcomes between the elderly and non-elderly patients. The risk profiles of the 2 groups are discussed. Contrary to conventional belief, elderly patients are shown not to have significantly worse treatment outcomes than their younger counterparts, and their risk profile is also less complicated.
