This study reports on a needs assessment done in the greater Potchefstroom area with the aim to evaluate the various community services of the Potchesfstroom Service Centre for the Aged. This study ascertained why some aged people are not members of the service centre and what kinds of services are preferred by members and non-members of the service centre. Some recommendations had also been made regarding steps to be taken by the Potchesfstroom Service Centre for the Aged in order to still improve the current services offered. [Article in Afrikaans].

This article provides an overview of the needs of older persons in South Africa today. It acknowledges the strong policy lead being given by government to ensure the positive integration of older persons within society, support for them within their families, their access to proper community-based services, their protection from abuse and ageism and promoting their general quality of life. At the same time the article stresses the size of the challenge that exists to turn government policy into reality in the lives of older people. As elsewhere in the world increasing numbers of older persons with a wide range of complex needs can be expected. Within South Africa migratory patterns, HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty may impede the growth in the number of the older population. At the same time those same phenomena will make the delivery of the necessary community-based services particularly difficult. A number of recommendations are made as to what the priorities should be for service delivery organisations within this context of ambitious policy but limited resources.

This South African article reports on the perspectives of black older people regarding where they believe persons such as themselves should stay, where they themselves would like to stay, and where their families and children would like them to stay. Sixty older people were interviewed for the survey. It was found that the indigenous support system for caring for elderly people in their communities by their children is still practised and preferred by the elderly, but not significantly so by the younger generation. It became clear from the study that old-age homes were still a rather new and largely unacceptable concept to elderly black people.
