Nutritional care for older people

This film highlights the importance of good nutritional care and hydration for older people living in residential care and in their own homes. The film promotes the use of the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST) in identifying those at risk of malnutrition through a simple body mass index calculation (the tool is available from the SCIE Dignity in Care website). Where height and weight are difficult to measure, the tool suggests alternatives. Food and mealtimes are very important to older people. The film shows how listening to what older people want to eat and preparing fresh food can enhance the meal time experience. The benefits of good hydration are also highlighted. This film has now been reviewed and is now available as two separate films: 'Dignity in care: nutrition for older people in care homes' and 'Dignity in care: nutrition for older people at home.'

Drawing on their updated guidance on dignity in care for older people, the Social Care Institute for Excellence discusses the link between pain control and dignity. The eight main factors that promote dignity are listed. Pain management and its connection to dignity is then discussed in detail. A retired healthcare worker also describes what it is like to be living in constant pain.
Keeping personal budgets personal: learning from the experiences of older people, people with mental health problems and their carers

This report is a summary of people’s experiences of using self-directed support and personal budgets. The research was conducted by a joint team from Acton Shapiro, the National Centre for Independent Living (NCIL) and the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU). The study was based primarily on the experiences of 69 personal budget holders and carers, supported by the views of 40 practitioners and managers from local authorities, and 12 support provider organisations (including five user-led organisations). The findings are structured around the main stages of the personal budget process: moving to a personal budget, including access to information and advice; assessment, self-assessment and resource allocation; support planning and brokerage arrangements; setting up services and managing the personal budget. A final section covers key themes and issues. Whilst examples of positive practice were found, all the case study sites emphasised that it was still ‘early days’ for them in terms of the implementation of personal budgets, and both their personal budgets systems and front-line practice were still evolving.

This web-based resource provides an overview of information and current practice to all those involved in assessing the social care needs of older people with mental health needs. It is aimed primarily at practitioners undertaking assessments, in particular, those front-line staff who may be the first professional in contact with an older person or their family and friends. The Guide provides access to the information and skills that inform sound judgements in the support of service users and carers. Its coverage includes: messages from research; current policy and guidance; service users and carers; the social workers role in assessment; assessing need; black and minority ethnic older people; implications of the Mental Health Act 1983; and interagency working. Also incorporated in the contents are practice and service examples, useful further reading and links to additional information on the web and to full text of official guidance and standards. This updated Guide refreshes SCIE’s 2010 Practice Guide ‘Facts about FACS’, on good practice in applying current policy on assessment and deciding eligibility. It takes account of changes in the policy, resource and practice environments since 2010, including the strong emphasis on more integrated working with the NHS. And it makes links to the new provisions of the Care Bill, due to begin implementation in 2015. Key practice points for practitioners, general practitioner, care commissioning groups and health wellbeing boards are presented. The Guide will be helpful to social workers and social care staff taking part in the assessment process, and also GPs and other NHS staff who are increasingly engaged in joint assessment and commissioning. This web-based practice guide is aimed at local authority and health commissioners, practitioners, service users, adult placement scheme staff and carers in England. The guide is based on information from a practice survey that identified emerging and developing practice; a literature review that pulled together the key literature on adult placements; and an analytical report that identified the key messages from these two surveys. It identifies relevant national minimum standards, and highlights findings and case examples from the practice survey, as well as from the literature where available. The Guide contains practice points, including areas of conflict, on-going debate about roles and responsibilities, and the application of person-centred approaches to adult placements. It contains sections on: being person-centred, assessment and referral, matching and introductions, monitoring and review, moving on, adult placement carers, advocacy; and person-centred planning.
