In an effort to strengthen the basic aging competency of social work students, the authors assessed the general quantity and quality of aging content in a sample of foundation social work textbooks. Of nearly 10,000 pages reviewed, only about 3% (309 pages) included aging content. A foundation cultural diversity text included the most aging content (6%), with only 5% aging-related content identified in HBSE texts, 2% across practice books reviewed, 4% within policy texts, 2% in research texts, and less than 1 page in the 1 field education text. A textbook analysis framework and a review of findings are provided.

Social work education has neglected gerontology at the same time that the demand for ageing-competent practitioners has increased. Survey's focus groups, and other sources indicate a lack of current curriculum content, little encouragement for students, limited gerontological expertise among academics and more interest by students in gaining gerontological knowledge than expected. Discusses the issues from an American perspective and suggests actions for practitioners and field agency supervisors.

Social work practice with older adults and their families is increasingly recognized by the profession as a major field of practice in a wide range of health care and community-based settings. This article reviews emerging trends and issues in the fields of aging and health care, drawing on gerontological health care research which bridges these areas. Given the growing number and diversity of older adults in our society, and dramatic changes in the organization and delivery of health care, the authors suggest skills and competencies essential to enhancing the well-being of older adults and their families in the 21st Century. It is written from an American perspective. (Copies of this article are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Centre, Haworth Press Inc., 10 Alice Street, Binghamton, NY 13904-1580).

In 1999, the Hartford Foundation funded the CSWE SAGE-SW Project to establish what content is necessary to social work practice. This article discusses The John A. Hartford Foundation CSWE SAGE-SW Project through an historical reflection of curriculum development within the profession. The author proposes that, in practice with older adults, the social work profession revisit its traditional allegiance to the person-in-situation paradigm and redress an imbalance that has obscured older clients as persons in their own right. The case is made that older adults and their subjective reality must be restored as a focus of social work practice if the profession is to play a significant and much-needed role in community-based services to a growing future population of older persons living in their own homes and directing their lives but in need of support. Building on the practice wisdom of the past and current generic models of social work practice in North America, guidelines are presented as a starting place for building practice models applicable to older clients. The broader context of community health and social services programs is examined from the perspective of the obstacles to and potential opportunities for increasing professional social work services to older persons and their families.

Even before ageing became a challenge to society, it already was for social work professionals. What interested the social work professionals were the older people who accumulated low incomes, poverty, loneliness, isolation, disease and several outbuildings. The increasing number of older and much older people reconfigured the intervention of professionals in this area. This intervention is in accordance with the policies of the welfare state, based on the rights and human dignity and a paradigm of social development oriented to social cohesion. The professionals are now responsible for older people policies in social and health care areas. The article includes an analysis of the relationship between social work, ageing and policies for older people and some exploratory results obtained through the analysis of relevant documents that allowed us to characterise the field of social work intervention with older people in the social security system and field of social action. This integrated analysis in a context of economic crisis takes a critical perspective on the impacts of reconfiguration policies for the older people and social work in those days.
