The aim of the research was to investigate the social and policy implications of nonheterosexual ageing. Through exploring the experience of self-identified lesbians, gay men and bisexuals aged 50 and above we intended to identify the specific issues that arise for ‘older’ non-heterosexuals, explore strategies developed in negotiating everyday living outside established norms and supports, and identify key issues that arise for policy. The research was shaped by a theoretical interest in the challenges that contemporary social change brings up for ageing populations themselves and for policy makers.

Housing issues are at the heart of the Governments agenda with the publication of the Housing Green Paper in April 2000. A number of clear demographic and social trends are shaping the nature of demand for housing, support, health and care services for older people over the next decades: the number of older people aged over 60 is on the increase; the number of frail older people is on the increase; older people who are owner-occupiers are on the increase; over half the older population are women; older people from black and minority ethnic groups are rising a group often marginalised from mainstream policies; the expectations and aspirations of older people are likely to rise over time.

Against a background of population ageing, policy makers in the majority of industrialised countries are developing policies aimed at extending working life and promoting the benefits of employing older workers. This report reviews developments in several countries and offers recommendations for public policy. Based on a review of recent literature and interviews with experts in Australia, Finland, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the USA, this report offers: a critical appraisal of current policies; highlights the fragmentation of these policies and the limited evidence for their effectiveness; considers the disadvantages of focusing attention on 'older workers'; attempts to shift the debate away from a narrow discussion of the needs of older workers towards a more general discussion of policy on work and the ageing process; shows how other countries are tackling age and employment issues; draws lessons for the development of public policy for older workers.

The increasing population of older adults in this country has created a growing demand for gerontological social workers. Despite this demand, few graduate level social work students indicate a preference for working with older clients. Using symbolic interactionism as a theoretical framework, this study sought to identify factors predictive of MSW students' interest in securing post-graduate geriatric employment. The contributions of closeness to elders, contact with elders, education, attitudes toward aging, and rewarding interactions with elders were examined. In the final model rewarding interactions with older clients, contact frequency, and geriatric skill level emerged as significant predictors of students' desire to pursue aging-related employment (F (8, 128) = 17.8, p < .0001, R2 = .54). Implications for social work education are discussed. (Copies of this article are available from: Haworth Document Delivery Centre, Haworth Press Inc., 10 Alice Street, Binghamton, NY 13904-1580).

Developing effective community services and promoting the well-being of citizens in Lewisham requires all agencies to work together more effectively. This three-year strategy, which has been developed with local people, policy makers and professionals across Lewisham, will provide a framework for: challenging age discrimination; providing simpler access to information and services; giving more say to older people in the type and location of services they can receive; ensuring better co-ordination of services through closer and joined-up working between different agencies to meet the needs of older people; creating better opportunities for older people to speak for themselves; and creating better opportunities for older people to contribute to their local community.

This report provides new evidence that ageism and discrimination are having devastating effects on the lives of people as young as forty, with a cost to the economy of up to £31 billion per year. It explores, in detail, the experiences of people over forty trying to enter the labour market, including: people who have been made redundant; the longterm unemployed; women returners; people with disabilities; and people still in a job but needing new skills to keep going. Employers’ attitudes, policies and practices are examined, revealing a worrying lack of awareness of national and European legislation in relation to the employment of older people.
