During the 1990s, the British population has been urged by government and financial institutions to make more personal preparation for retirement and to begin doing so while they are still relatively young. This article, set within a wider analysis of people's long-term planning behaviour, investigates the extent to which a sample of the general planning behaviour, investigates the extent to which a sample of the general population of Kirkcaldy in Scotland, mostly aged between 30 and 49, has given thought to the question of retirement, feels they have made financial preparation for it, and also how comfortable they expect retirement to be. The study concludes planning for retirement must be seen as part of planning as a whole, and that the propensity to plan is the outcome of a complex web or material, social, cultural and psychological factors.

Middle-aged and young adults completed in adaptation of the Severity of Violence Against Women Scale and the Elder Abuse Attitudes and Behavioural Intentions Scale - Revised to examine the impact of (a) respondent age, (b) age and gender or perpetrator and victim, and (c) history of experienced violence on perceptions of elder abuse. Results suggested that middle-aged respondents viewed psychological behaviours more harshly than did younger respondents and that both middle-aged women and young men were less tolerant of middle-aged perpetrators. These data support a view of elder abuse that emphasises its relativistic nature, wherein perceptions of elder abuse depend on both the characteristics of the perceiver and the victim and perpetrator variables.

This report launches a new Joseph Rowntree Foundation research programme, Transitions After 50. The programme addresses the issues that arise for people making the transition from work to retirement, especially those for whom withdrawal from work becomes an issue before the state retirement age. It collects together information on what is presently known about three aspects of this transition. First, older people’s opportunities at work and their fortunes in the labour market. Second, the effect of working patterns in later life on retirement income. And third, the ways in which people over fifty develop unpaid activities, such as volunteering and caring, beyond the context of paid work. The three areas are addressed in the form of three separate research reviews.
