The majority of older people who are discharged from National Health Service (NHS) acute hospitals are dealt with promptly. However, the Department of Health estimate that in September 2002 some 8.9 per cent of older patients occupying NHS acute care beds had already been declared fit to leave hospital, but had not yet done so for a variety of reasons. This equates to more than 4,100 older patients on any given day, although this is significantly lower than at the same point in 2001.
