The quality of mental health services for older people in Wales varies greatly depending on where they live, and there are severe shortages of specialist care when they can no longer be supported at home. Carers are generally well supported but their needs should be assessed more consistently and staff in residential homes need better training. Report highlights over 30 examples of good practice, but says that this needs to be shared more widely. Calls for more partnership working between health and social care and the introduction of defined minimum standards.

A postal questionnaire was circulated to all consultants in old age psychiatry in Wales, examining provision of services with reference to the indicative service levels defined by the Royal College of Psychiatrists and Royal College of Physicians. The response rate was 100%. Levels of staffing and resources overall fell well below recommendations and varied widely between services. No association was found between morale or how well population needs were perceived as being met, and the size of the population served.

Reports on findings from the carer component of the Gwynedd Dementia Study. It is based on carer interviews, using quantitative and qualitative data. It describes the carers, their perceptions of their dependents' problems, the common challenges they face, their experiences of formal and informal support and, with reference to the literature, identifies implications for policy and practice. Levels of formal service inputs were low, but most of the carers appeared to receive the services they needed. Problems are primarily associated with crisis support and long-term care is accepted reluctantly. Suggests that community care dementia specialists could play a supporting role for carers.
