Analyses the extent to which the formal social service system in the USA has responded to the burgeoning elder population and its growing demand for daily caregiving. Examines the current literature, defines the characteristics of caregivers, the complex nature of caregiver stress and the availability of current formal support services. Conclusions indicate that institutionalised support services available to the frail elderly are woefully inadequate.
