Exploring the attitudes and behaviours of older people living with cancer

This study identifies a range of attitudes and perceptions which shape the way that older people access cancer services, influencing when and how they seek help, as well as the outcomes they experience. The findings are based on two online panel surveys of 1,004 adults aged 55 and over living with cancer and 500 adults of the same age range who have never had a cancer diagnosis. In addition, fieldwork was undertaken and 26 in-depth interviews with people aged 55 and over living with cancer and two focus groups with older people who have never had cancer carried out. A number of key themes emerge from the research, including: there are differences in the views of older people with cancer and those who have not been diagnosed with cancer, with those with direct experience of the condition having more positive perceptions about it; some of the preconceptions that people may hold about older people’s attitudes have been challenged, for example, older people are no more likely to choose not to have treatment than younger people, and no more likely to be concerned about the consequences of having treatment; a series of misconceptions about the risk of cancer and eligibility for screening may impact upon early diagnosis efforts and should be addressed; older people are more likely than younger people to place trust in their health professionals but at the same time believe that discrimination against older people does exist (albeit not necessarily in their personal experience); nonetheless, older people say they are willing to seek help, but are not necessarily aware of the services that exist to support them. Reports on the findings from the 2016 Your Care Rating surveys, which gathered the views of residents and their families and friends on the care provided in over a thousand care homes in the UK. A total of 35 care providers took part in the survey. , which is in its fifth consecutive year. A total of 18,786 residents participated in the survey, with a response rate 38 per cent. A separate survey was completed by 10,963 family members and friends, a response rate of 47 per cent. The report discusses the results under the following themes: overall performance; staff and care; choice and having a say; home comforts; and quality of life. The overall results suggest that both residents and their relatives and friends are positive about the care and the service they receive in their care home, with high scores achieved in all aspects of care. The overall rating score has also increased over the five years that the survey has been conducted. Ratings were found to be slightly lower among family and friends than among residents, and there were also differences on specific aspects of care. Areas were respondents were consistently less positive about were the quality and variety of food and the amount of time staff have to talk to residents. (Edited publisher abstract)

Report presenting a summary of findings from the 2014 Your Care Rating Survey, which is the largest survey of care home residents in the UK. The report provides details of how the survey was conducted and provides a summary of results under four themes: staff and care; home comforts; choice and having a say; and quality of life. The survey was conducted over 29 care providers and obtained views from over 21,000 residents from 1,096 care homes. Findings were analysed to give each home an Overall Performance Rating (OPR) out of 1,000. Although designed primarily for care home residents aged 65 or over, the survey also includes younger adults living in care homes. The overall results of resident feedback paints an encouraging picture of life in care homes from the majority of homes which took part. The overall average overall performance rating score for participating homes was 872 (in line with 871 in 2013) and more than half of the care homes which took part in the previous year improved their OPR score. Within the theme relating to Staff and Care, staff have positive views of the manner in which staff treat them, however a relatively smaller proportion of residents felt staff treat them as an individual and have time to talk. Other findings were that residents were less positive about having a say in their care and about having choice than they were about other aspects of their care, such as feeling safe and secure. Improving residents’ perceptions of having choice and control within their care home and also treating them in a more person centred way may help to improve their experience within their care home. The Ipsos MORI survey, commissioned by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC), the Equal Opportunities Commission and Carers UK, however, reveals a gulf between the public’s expectations about the kind of support they should receive and the reality of existing provision. This gulf is set to widen as the UK population ages and demand for social care grows, underscoring the need to reform the current system so that it enables both older and disabled people, and their relatives and friends who provide care for them, to keep their independence.
