This study examined that relationship between vision and hearing impairments and depressive-anxiety syndrome in older people. Participants included 7,389 people not affected by dementia, from the Faenza Project, Northern Italy. Interviews were administered to detect the presence of sensory impairment. The prevalence of vision and hearing impairment was 1.4% and 0.2% respectively, with an increasing trend in people aged 75 years and over. The prevalence of depressive syndrome was higher among vision-impaired participants, especially women and persons aged 75 or more. The prevalence of anxiety syndrome was higher in the hearing-impaired group. Vision-impaired participants, especially women and participants aged 75 and above had twice the probability to show depressive syndrome, and hearing-impaired individuals showed a minor increase probability of presenting anxiety syndrome. Overall, findings suggest that sensory impairments in older people can increase their probability of experiencing depressive and anxiety syndrome. Correction of these impairments could improve the quality of life in this population.
