The authors describe the findings of a research project on older people's experiences of intermediate care carried out by Help the Aged. The programme operated in seven sites across England and piloted different ways of including volunteers and the voluntary sector in NHS and social services intermediate care. The authors suggests the forthcoming white paper on care outside hospital will need to address how more intensive short-term support, such as that provided by intermediate care, can be cushioned by a tier of low-level continuous voluntary sector support which guarantees older people "someone to expect each day".

Life expectancy of people with learning disabilities has increased substantially. Services for older people with learning disabilities are provided by various sectors and practitioners (generic health and social care, or specialist learning disability or old age). Literature suggests practitioners do not feel well-equipped to support people with learning disabilities as they grow older, and older people's services do not always have the opportunity to share experiences and skills. Highlights areas such as dementia support, where the intersection between services is not clear, and explores what might help practitioners meet the needs of people with learning disabilities as they grow older.

The authors take a multidisciplinary approach and employ both medical and psycho-social models of depression. The medical model is used to identify symptoms, make diagnoses and work towards optimal treatment. Psycho-social perspectives provide insight into the scale and complexity of the condition and point to its social causes. The authors identify different levels of depression through in-depth analysis and consider the condition in relation to, but distinct from, dementia, psychosis and anxiety disorders, helping professionals to make the correct diagnosis. Supporting case studies show that depression, and the physical symptoms often linked to it, are amenable to treatment. The authors provide practical guidance for health and social care practitioners and suggest numerous coping strategies.
